Individual Counseling

It takes great courage and vulnerability to allow another person into our internal world. We have a cultural history of avoiding our emotional experiences through criticism or invalidation and most of us come from families who did the same. By choosing individual therapy, we are taking a step toward challenging the internal agreements within us that consciously or unconsciously believe it is unsafe to share our authentic emotions. The more we are able to share our internal experiences, the more we are able to receive support and the less barriers we have to healing.

Therapy gives us a chance to build a better relationship with our emotions. One that invites them as messengers to healing rather than barriers to existing. When we are not able to listen to and care for our emotional experience, we show symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as reactive outbursts that don’t feel like us. This can lead to shame, guilt, and isolation as we want to be better but don’t know how to.

The process of trusting our emotional experience and learning to share it with others is one that inherently heals our attachment systems. As children, our caregivers (attachment figures) show us how to experience connection depending on their ability to be with all of our emotions. This is where our internal beliefs about ourselves and others form. These beliefs influence the way we perceive reality and the way we find connection in the world. Some of us learned to retreat or hide because the only place to connect was with ourselves. Others learned to fight or force to get connection. When we can learn to experience connection with ourselves, we can begin to learn how to stay connected with others even during conflict.

As a therapist, I hold the therapeutic space with a great commitment to care for all that arises. It takes time for clients to establish trust in this relationship depending on their attachment history. The more trust is built, the easier it is to be able to cultivate the healing wisdom of our inner experience. This allows healing to become natural, beautiful, and even liberating.

Once healing from a place of trust unfolds, we experience a remembering of ourselves, a coming home to our nature. This process is one where we truly learn to thrive because we know ourselves, our needs, our authentic beliefs, and experiences in a way that helps us stay in our nature. We begin to enjoy what we experience inside and feel a natural inspiration to create the life we dream of.

"For there to be a world at all, every indigenous, natural thing must start singing its song, dancing its dance, moving and breathing according to its own nature, saying its name, manifesting simultaneously its secret spiritual signature."
